Detroit Institute of Art

TRANSIT will present two programs of works at the Detroit Institute of Art on May 4. The Friday Night Live! concert will take place in the Rivera Court, which features a stunning 27-panel fresco of industrial Detroit by Diego Rivera.

We will present two programs. The 7:00 program is Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time. This masterpiece, like our second program, is scored for violin, clarinet, cello, and piano. It was written and premiered in a Prisoner of War camp in 1941. Messaien’s exquisite and brilliant writing takes the listener through a journey of colors, emotions, and other-worldly sounds.

The 8:30 program features works by living composers which also feature the sublime and the exquisite:

Albertas Navickas: Midsummer Music (2006)

Scott Wollschleger: Folding (2012)

Leah Maria Villarreal: Piano Trio I (2010)

Richard Carrick: Sonic Tapestry Communications (2010)

David Biedenbender: Red Vesper (2014)

Mary Kouyoumdjian: Sedna Beneath the Sea [Requiem, Above Waters] (2011)
