Corps Exquis is a new aesthetic experience that exists at the intersection of video installation, rock concert, avant-garde cinema, and experimental classical and electronic music. Conceived by composer Daniel Wohl, Corps Exquis is a special project in conjunction with TRANSIT New Music and a collective of New York City video artists that combines the vitality of the city’s emerging experimental music and video art scenes. This large-scale performance piece transcends artistic boundaries while creating an immersive sensory world.
Corps Exquis was premiered at Galapagos Art Space in a program alongside experimental music by Tristan Perich and So Percussion. Subsequently, it has left its mark on NYC venues as disparate as Webster Hall and Saint Paul’s Chapel at Trinity Church Wall Street. A forthcoming album will be released on New Amsterdam Records in 2012.
The Surrealists developed the exquisite corpse parlor game in 1920′s Paris in which a piece of art is collectively assembled. Each player is assigned a section, but only allowed a glimpse of the very end of the previous player’s contribution; no one sees the final piece until each individual section is completed. In this way, a cohesive work is assembled, but each contributor’s identity remains distinct in his/her work. The video artists in Corps Exquis worked closely with composer Daniel Wohl using a similar process with seamless results.
